Take your screenwriting to a new level

There is a big difference between a good screenplay and a great screenplay. Writers who get their work read by commissioners, called in to meetings and given the green light are the ones who go beyond the basic skills that people read about in books and hear in workshops.

My Screenwriting 3 course at University of Edinburgh was specifically designed to take newer writers into the advanced realms of professional screenwriting. On this course we will look at the key skills that turn OK writing into great writing that delivers to the reader. It’s not a course for beginners but if you have done some screenwriting already, maybe taken some courses and are frustrated that your scripts are not hitting the mark or getting the right response, then this course is for you.

Through guided sessions and writing exercises you will learn the advanced skills of:

  • Great scene writing that moves the story forward
  • Top tricks and tips to make your dialogue zing
  • How to write that most important skill of subtext (and it is not just about dialogue)
  • How to make exposition work as dramatic story
  • How to approach rewriting in the best way to improve your screenplay
  • How to write visual story that readers can see
  • How to write so that the reader ‘feels’ the story
  • The one big secret to great professional screenwriting that nobody ever tells you

We will end by talking about how to engage with the industry and try to sell your scripts.

Time to learn something new

The New Year is traditionally a time when people think about training. Academic courses plus one-off, ad hoc and skills workshops kick in to give people the chance to try new things, develop skills and improve career prospects.

I am passionate about training. When I started out, there weren’t many training courses. I read books, listened to writers talking and tried teaching myself – learn by doing and learn by mistakes. Nowadays I try to save people some of the pain I went through.

I run writing workshops at a variety of places. Starting this summer, check out the new training courses I am offering. See them all here.
